7 Tips for Best Results from Your ED Medication

Erectile dysfunction

You can maximize the erection-friendly effects of Viagra and other oral ED medications by following a few simple recommendations.

Men who have not previously used one of the PDE5 inhibitors, such as Viagra and Cialis, can get the most out of those medications by heeding a handful of suggestions from those who’ve already been there and done that.

1. You’ll still need to get your erection the old-fashioned way.

Millions of men with erection problems have found the answer to their prayers in the family of erectile dysfunction drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. Although these drugs do work wonders, they are not miracle drugs. They do not represent a cure for ED, but rather they temporarily improve blood flow to the penis, which allows men who ordinarily have difficulty getting and keeping an erection to do so for four to 36 hours, depending the drug taken.

However, don’t expect a spontaneous erection, because it probably isn’t going to happen. Physical stimulus to the male genitals or increased feelings of sexual desire are typical triggers for the arousal that leads to erection.

2. It’s probably best to take ED drugs on an empty stomach.

Although the manufacturer’s guidelines for taking the popular ED drugs generally say they can be taken with or without food, you’re probably best advised to take them on an empty stomach. That way, they will probably be more rapidly absorbed and thus go to work a bit faster, doctors say.

3. ED drugs take a little time to produce desired results, so plan accordingly.

Like most medications, the active ingredients in PDE5 inhibitors must be absorbed into the bloodstream before they become active in your system. Some drugs may take effect in as little as 15 minutes after you’ve taken them, while others may not produce results until almost an hour has passed. Familiarize yourself with the specific onset of action associated with the drug you’re taking, so that you can plan your romantic interval accordingly.

4. Make sure you know what to expect from the drug you’re taking.

Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Staxyn, and Stendra all belong to the family of oral ED medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. They are called PDE5 inhibitors because they temporarily disable the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, which can reduce blood flow to the penis. Each of these drugs has its own unique chemical composition, and as such they differ from one another in subtle ways.

For example, Viagra and Levitra provide a four- to six-hour window of time for sexual activity, while the effects of Cialis on demand can last for up to 36 hours. Daily Cialis, a lower dose of Cialis than found in its on-demand formulation, claims to allow men to achieve an erection whenever the need arises if the pill is taken faithfully every day and for a break-in period of at least a couple of weeks.

5. Avoid any drugs that may interact adversely with your ED drug.

Talk to your doctor about prescription and over-the-counter medications that you should avoid while taking a PDE5 inhibitor. If you are already on one of these problematic drugs, ask your doctor if he can prescribe a substitute less likely to interfere with the ED drug. Certain drugs, such as nitrate-based medications, should never be taken while you are using PDE5 inhibitors.

6. Finding the right dose for you might take a little trial and error.

Most of the PDE5 inhibitors are available in tablets of varying strength. In the case of Viagra, for example, you can purchase tablets of 25, 50, and 100 milligrams. The recommended starting dose is 50 milligrams, which is the logical dose to start with. However, if it fails to produce the desired result, you can adjust your dose upward to 100 milligrams. In the event, 50 milligrams is more than enough, you can see if a 25 milligram tablet will do the trick.

7. Consider ordering your ED medications online.

Erectile dysfunction

Thanks to Viagra and the other drugs that have followed in its wake, erectile dysfunction caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis is more readily treatable than once was the case.

Under current regulations, you cannot buy Viagra or any of the other PDE5 inhibitors in this country without a prescription.

If you have one from your doctor, you can get it filled at the local pharmacy or use it instead to order the drug from a trustworthy online facilitator, such as AccessRx.com. Simply fax the prescription or scan and it email it to AccessRx along with your order.

If you don’t have a prescription and would prefer to avoid the added cost and inconvenience of a visit to the doctor, AccessRx can arrange a complimentary online consult with a member of its team of licensed U.S. physicians. If the doctor finds that you are an appropriate candidate for the drug, a prescription will be authorized.
