Botox Instead of Viagra for ED?

Physician with a syringe.

A Botox injection could help erectile dysfunction patients who don’t regain temporary erectile function after using Viagra.

Botox for the penis? No, it’s not a cosmetic treatment but an alternative erectile dysfunction therapy for men whose ED symptoms don’t respond to Viagra or one of the other oral ED drugs. And although it is hardly the first line of treatment for male impotence, it could offer a last-resort alternative for men who’ve tried everything else without success.

Studies thus far have been relatively limited. However, a team of urologic researchers affiliated with the Andrology Department at Cairo University Hospitals conducted a review of two clinical and two animal studies. That review was published in the January 2018 issue of Sexual Medicine Reviews.

Positive Results Reported

In one of the human studies, men with intractable ED received a 50-milliliter injection of Botox (botulinum toxin type A) into the spongy cavernosal tissue of the penis. Nearly half of those receiving the injection reported that they were able to achieve satisfactory erections, and roughly 25 percent were able to engage in penetrative sex. Not all that impressive, but a hopeful sign for ED patients who’ve exhausted all other treatment options.

Noting the promise shown by the few studies undertaken thus far, the Egyptian researchers called for large-scale, multicenter trials to further explore the potential of Botox treatments for ED.
