Is Sildenafil Fake Viagra?

Drug counterfeiters have become increasingly sophisticated in the production of their fake medications, so buy your Viagra only from well-known pharmacies and online vendors.

Sildenafil, or sildenafil citrate to give it its full name, is no more “fake” than brand name Viagra.

It is simply an FDA-approved generic alternative to Pfizer’s iconic little blue pill.

And after nearly two decades on the U.S. market, Viagra finally got generic competition beginning in December 2017 with the introduction of two nonbrand formulations of the drug.

More generic versions of the drug are sure to follow shortly.

That’s not to say, however, that there’s any shortage of truly “fake Viagra” being sold illegally around the world. Counterfeit Viagra pops up online, at flea market stalls, and in the novelty shops of unscrupulous vendors in sleazy alleys.

Some of this fake Viagra may actually contain sildenafil, but almost always in amounts that are too minute to have any effect or too large and thus potentially dangerous.

What’s worse, these counterfeits often contain toxic materials, such as pulverized drywall or printer’s ink as filler materials and coloring agents.

Fake Viagra Is Everywhere

Pointing up the widespread availability of counterfeit Viagra are a couple of articles posted in late 2017 and May 2018 at the website of Metro, one of the United Kingdom’s most widely circulated newspapers.

In one, writer Jimmy Nsubuga reports that fake Viagra is readily available at open-air markets in and around London.

In another, reporter Adam Smith says that fake Viagra has even made it onto pharmacy shelves in Jamaica.

To avoid counterfeit Viagra, buy your ED medication only from reputable dealers, whether major pharmacy chains or well-established online vendors.

Longtime online facilitator AccessRx.com falls into the latter category, having sold Viagra and other ED drugs since the late 1990s.
